4. Margaret Atwood, Hag-Seed: A Retelling of the Tempest . Given the author is so famous, it’s strange this book hasn’t received more attention. Perhaps that is because it requires a reasonable degree of familiarity with Shakespeare’s The Tempest , worth the reread if you must or are so inclined. This is one of Atwood’s best novels, and it focuses on an over the hill director’s attempt to stage Shakespeare at the local prison.
4. Novelist : Margaret Atwood, especially Cat’s Eye . I used to like Robertson Davies, but somehow his novels have not stuck with me.
I am a fan of Atwood's Cat's Eye and The Handmaid's Tale , both of which are well constructed and compelling on virtually every page. Many of her other books seem meritorious to me ( The Blind Assassin , Robber's Bride ), but I don't enjoy finishing them and my attention ends up wandering. The failing may be mine. I don't think I would find her non-fiction book on debt very interesting but I haven't tried it.
