Richard Overy, Rain of Ruin: Tokyo, Hiroshima, and the Surrender of Japan is a short but very good and substantive look at the non-nuclear and also nuclear bombing campaigns.

The author is Richard Overy and the subtitle is The Last Imperial War, 1931-1945 .  There are two categories of Richard Overy books, the good and the tremendously good.  So far this book falls into the latter camp, noting that some of the introductory material (while fine) was excessively familiar to me.  The eventual focus is on North Africa, the Turkey-Persia region and the Caucasus, how Japan ran its new colonies, how the British empire started collapsing, and much more along those lines.  Th...

Here is one very positive review of the book .  In the United States the book comes out February 2014 under a different title .  You also can buy the British edition for U.S. Kindle now.

3. Richard Overy, 1939: Countdown to War .  I didn't think a book so short on this topic could be good.  I was wrong.  Overy has a strong overall track record as an author.
