Discover your inner economist
Tyler Cowen, Núria Parés Sellarés
Will you give me your secret blog address? (2007-06-26)

Oh, Pareto optimality is a such an overrated idea.  In any case the offer still stands.  You can pre-order the book (as so many others have done…thanks everyone!), write me at [email protected] , and get access to the new secret blog .

Grave matters
Harris, Mark
Grave Matters (2007-06-25)

That is from the really quite interesting Grave Matters: A Journey Through the Modern Funeral Industry to a Natural Way of Burial , by Mark Harris.  As you may have guessed, the book is a plea for eco-friendly burials.  As for me, I would like my body to be disposed of at a profit, though I doubt if we will have seen enough sectoral deregulation by then…

Out stealing horses
Per Petterson
Out Stealing Horses (2007-06-24)

Buy it here .  Here is the first chapter .

Capital Ideas
Peter L. Bernstein
Capital Ideas Evolved (2007-06-23)

That is from Peter L. Bernstein’s new and noteworthy Capital Ideas Evolving .  This book is a sequel to his earlier Capital Ideas: The Improbably Origins of Modern Wall Street , an account of how financial theory shaped the practice of Wall Street.  My main complaint is that ithis book ought to have much more than it does.  Although it is not short, it reads like 2/5ths of an excellent book; still I will take what I can get.

Dead Ringers Jeremy Irons
My favorite things Quebecois (2007-06-18)

Actress :  Genevieve Bujold, most of all in Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers .

Scriabin Complete Sonatas Alexander Nikolayevich
My favorite things Quebecois (2007-06-18)

Pianist : Oscar Peterson.  His best albums are The Trio and the set with Joe Pass at Salle Pleyel .  For all his talent, many of his CDs are quite boring.  On another front, I usually don’t like Marc-Andre Hamelin.  Despite the critical raves, I find him icy cold, enjoying only his rendition of the Scriabin sonatas .

Price Theory
Milton Friedman
How to study economics in your spare time (2007-06-12)

The best start is our blogroll and then try Mankiw’s Principles book if you need the background and don’t mind the length.  More generally, here is Greg’s recommended reading list , though I don’t like Heilbroner’s book.  I also recommend Arnold Kling’s on-line text , my own In Praise of Commercial Culture , but best of all is having an office next door to Alex, Bryan, and Robin.  For mathematical approaches, see the Ph.d. textbook by Hal Varian , Eric Rasmusen’s Games and Signalling , Milton Fr...

The case against adolescence
Robert Epstein
The case against adolescence (2007-06-11)

Here is an interview with Robert Epstein , recommended.  His new book, The Case Against Adolescence , argues that teenagers should be treated much more like adults.

Economics and hermeneutics
Don Lavoie
Richard Rorty dies (2007-06-10)

See Rorty’s readable Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature ; to some this is warmed-over Quine mixed with Continental gobbledy-gook but you can think that and still value the book. This book (only $200!) has a wonderful essay on the importance of Rorty for economists and economic method.
